The British Council is the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. The British Council’s Music team works with over 100 countries to connect British musicians, educators and industry people with their counterparts and audiences around the world, providing opportunities to share knowledge and experience different cultures.

SEAPHONY ORCHESTRA x FAMLAB: Scottish and Vietnamese music collaboration

In June 2019, British Council invited three Scottish Musicians - Tom Bancroft, David Shedden and Esther Swift - to take part in a music residency in Hoi An, Vietnam hosted by Lune Theatre, They spent 20 days with 40 musicians from across Vietnam. Conversations is the first piece in the Seaphony Orchestra Concert featuring Esther Swift, Mai Khoi and H’ NrÅ©il Kră Jãn, accompanied by a gong loop and numerous percussions.

EXTRA SOUL PERCEPTION

Extra Soul Perception is a creative collaboration that brings together innovative artists from the UK, Kenya and Uganda on a week-long music writing camp in Nairobi. Tash LC hosts 2 hours celebrating the music that has come from the writing camps. Artists who took part are: Faizal Mostrixx (UG), Labdi (KE), Karun, (KE), Hibotep (UG), Idd Aziza (KE), K15 (UK), Maxwell Owin (UK), Lex Amor (UK), Lynda Dawn (UK), Xenia Manasseh (KE).

FAMLAB ONLINE SESSION #2: ARTISTS AND RESIDENCIES

This FAMLAB Salon session will explore what makes a successful interntional artists residency. It is part of The British Council’s Heritage of Future Past programme, exploring aspects of Vietnam’s music and film heritage that are under-represented or at high risk of disappearing. The FAMLAB (Film, Archive, Music LAB) strand of the programme supports creative responses to this heritage by contemporary artists, including projects by Vietnamese artists in collaboration with UK artists and producers.
